A three-part Japanese export lacquer sewing cabinet, of diminutive form, gilt foliate and genre scene decorations throughout each surface. Square cabinet over hinged desktop, both revealing multiple drawers and compartments, and cabriole legs with paw footing. The top centre compartment fitted for a large pocket watch. Bone knobs and attributes. Provenance: Brought back in 1806 by captain Jacob Duijff when he was forced to stay in the ports of Japan for a long period of time, thence by decent. Japan, ca. 1800 -137.5 x 67.5 x 59 cm (closed), the exterior with signs of wear and loss to extremities. Would look wonderful when restored-
Captain Jacob Clasen Duijff (1765-1844): Born on Ameland, Duijff was captain of the super cargo vessel "Jan en Cornelis" from 1802 to 1822, sailing to the far east. In 1795 he married Dieuke (Dieuwetje) Hofker (1768-1842). Their daughter Trijtje Duijff (1798-1878) married Gribbert de Jong (1795-1860) who became second captain of the “Jan en Cornelis” in 1821 and it was quite rare to have two captains on a ship. A will dating from 1927 in the family archives describes many of the objects that Captain Duijff brought home from his trip to Japan when he returned in 1806. There is mention of four Japanese porcelain cups with names in underglaze blue and saucers in the will. The cups with ‘Jacob Duyf’ and “Dieuwke Duyff’ are still in the family together with the miniature portraits of Trijtje Duijff-De Jon and Gribbert de Jong. The portraits are both signed ‘Watrin’ for Jean Joseph Maria Watrin (1783-1855) and one dated 1837. A lovely cabinet with interesting provenance and of historical importance.
