Nooddaalder 1672 Struck in commemoration of the siege of Bernard van Galen, Bishop of Münster (Delm. 710 (R2) / Maill. 23.9 / Dav. 4987 / vL. III, 64) - 27.79 gram - Obv. arms of Campen with below CAMPEN / Rev. NE=/CESSITAS/ ALTERA/1672 - VF, minor scratches - Extremely rare and sold only once before by us - Ex. Collection Vinkenborg, bought auction L. Schulman 25 (April 2001), lot 1361 - During the brief siege and subsequent French occupation of the city in 1672/3, archival documents mention the melting down of churchly and civic silver. No special siege coins were produced however, since this silver was transformed into undated florins. Perhaps this medal was struck in an effort to produce the 80.000 Guilders needed to free the 12 hostages abducted by the French, or struck in commemoration several decades later. It is however clearly of 17th century manufacturing, as evidenced by the appearance of this type in early 18th century auction catalogues.
