Valuation of Militaria

Do you own old army uniforms, awards or a collection of militaria? Or did you inherit any militaria? Never give or throw it away without having it appraised first. You may own something special that, in an appraisal, turns out to be worth much more than you thought.

We do appraisals for:

  • Daggers
  • Swords
  • Helmets
  • Berets
  • Badges
  • Other military items

Militaria is a very broad collection category that spans hundreds of countries and dozens of themes. Popular items are uniforms and weapons. In addition, awards and decorations are also in high demand.

The Dutch Military Order of William is the highest distinction in the Netherlands, but there are many different military commemorative medals and awards for bravery that are also collected. For militaria, the value strongly depends on the historical context. For example, a uniform has a much higher value if it was worn by a famous soldier.

Do you own interesting militaria? Then have it appraised by our expert appraisers. They have a broad knowledge of the history and the production process of uniforms, for example. This allows them to identify if you own a special or original piece.

What to bring to your appraisal?

Tip: bring any paperwork with you. There are many counterfeits in circulation, mainly manufactured in Eastern Europe and Asia. To be able to prove whether something is real or to get to know the story behind it, all information is useful. Not only accompanying documents can be useful, but also any accessoires accompanying your militaria. And we don't just mean the associated ammunition, powder box or cleaning rod of your antique hunting rifles, but also the cleaning cloth, oil and polishing stone if it is an antique dagger or sword. For a value assessment of militaria, not only the object is decisive, but also the accompanying items and even the story behind the objects. For example, an antique revolver that has been used by a well-known soldier is of higher value. You've probably read about George Washington's antique pistols, which sold for $1.96 million in 2002.

Valuing antique weapons is an expertise in its own right, which not every valuation agency ventures into. In fact, only experienced arms dealers, museum employees and experts at auction houses, such as Heritage Auctions, have the necessary knowledge to be able to make a correct valuation of antique militaria. At Heritage Auctions a value indication of your antique pistols or antique hunting rifle is free of charge. However, if you want an official valuation report necessary to insure or auction your weapon(s), we unfortunately have to charge costs for this.

For an approximate estimate of your militaria, you can also send us pictures and a description over email. Send us clear photos of the front and back of your antique militaria, a close-up of any remarkable details, decorations, a name tag and damage. In addition, we would like to see photos of all objects, parts and documents related to the weapon. For a value indication of an antique (fire) weapon or weapon parts with a story, we advise you to visit our office in IJsselstein.
