A lacquer casket commissioned by the Portuguese. The rectangular casket with domed hinged cover, decorated in gold hiramaki-e and inlaid in mother-of-pearl on a black ground, the cover and four sides each with two panels with floral decoration, the front right panel with a duck amidst the flowers, each panel bordered with bands of geometric patterns and namban tendril, copper fittings engraved with stylised flowers, Japan, Momoyama period (late 16th century) -19 x 26 x15,5 cm, one hinge loose, expected wear and losses-For a near identical casket see Christie's London 'Japanese Art at the English Court', 19 December 2014, lot # 4.
