A rare, matching set of kura (saddle) and abumi (stirrups) dated Shotoku second year, fifth month (=1712), the whole decorated in gold lacquer showing tigers abidst bamboo and waterfalls, Japan, Edo period (1603-1868), dated 1712 -signs of wear and some cracks-_x000D_
Provenance: purchased at Kleifish Auctions, Cologne, Germany, 12-14 September, 1984, Lot # 1. According to the entry, the set came from the collection of Dutch diplomat General Jean Charles Pabst (1873-1942), a collector of Japanese art. The set is depicted on the reverse of the 1984 catalogue.
