As Dictator (49-44 BC) - AR Denarius (Rome February-March 44 BC, 3.88 g) - L. Aemilius Buca, moneyer - DICT PERPETVO CAESAR Laureate head of Julius Caesar right / L BVCA Venus Victrix standing facing, head left, holding Victoria, scepter in left (Crawford 480/8 / Sydenham 1061) - VF, a rare and desirable coin. Caesar was murdered on 15 March 44 BC, and the emission of this rare Denarius, showing his obvious portrait, was another proof to his murderers that he proclaimed himself a dictator for life. The obverse legend acclaims Caesar 'DICT(ator) PERPETVO', a title granted by the Senate in February 44 BC.
