1851 - Medal for Courage and Humanity shown by E. Kelly at the wreck of the Randolph - Obv. FOR COURAGE AND HUMANITY / Rev. * / LIEUt E. KELLY R.N. / (laurel branche) / WRECK OF RANDOLPH / 25th JUNE 1851. / MAURITIUS. / * - gilt 36 mm 22.82 g - XF - NB On June 25, 1851, the English sailing ship Randolph, en route from Madras to Mauritius, carrying a cargo of sugar, money and about 250 Indian emigrants, sank on a reef off Mauritius. The harbor master of Port Louis, Lieutenant Edward Kelly, along with a few others managed to rescue many shipwrecked persons with a mailboat. He received the silver medal from the Royal National Institution for the Preservation of Life from Shipwreck as well as a gold medal from the Colony of Mauritius. Although this medal is gilded, it does mention Mauritius as the publisher.
