Caesar was murdered on 15 March 44 BC, and the emission of this rare Denarius, showing his obvious portrait, was another proof to his murderers that he proclaimed himself a dictator for life. The obverse legend acclaims Caesar 'DICT(ator) PERPETVO', a title granted by the Senate in February 44 BC.
