This phenomenon seems to have initially been a solely Zeelandish phenomenon. Traditionally, the surname has been read as 'Bovien', though careful examination reveals 'Bovlen' instead. Boulen, Boulien, Boulijn and Boulin are all families frequently appearing in 17th century records from Zeeland
