Konstantin A. Korovin (1861-1939), "Parisian Street Scene at Night – Boulogne", oil on cardboard, signed lower left “Constant Korovine – Boulogne” - Dimensions: 41 cm x 32 cm- Verso: graphite underdrawing study of an urban scene. This atmospheric nocturne by Russian Impressionist Constantin Korovin captures a lively Parisian evening, likely in Boulogne, just outside the capital. Rendered in rich tones and expressive brushwork, the painting features a warmly lit corner café “Tabac du Palais” illuminated against glistening, rain-soaked cobblestones. Dramatic clouds roll across the night sky, adding emotional weight to the scene. The interplay of light, movement, and reflection is quintessential Korovin, conveying both mood and vitality. A faint yet detailed preparatory graphite sketch appears on the verso, showing an alternate or early layout for a similar streetscape, testament to Korovin’s process and artistic planning. Additionally, a small restoration is visible in the middle-left portion of the painted scene, identifiable by a slightly darker patch of pigment in the sky area. About the Artist: Konstantin A. Korovin was a leading figure of Russian Impressionism, known for his theatrical set designs and vibrant plein-air paintings. A graduate of the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture, and Architecture, he was deeply influenced by the French Impressionists and later settled in Paris. His works from this period frequently depict city life, often imbued with lyricism and a nuanced sense of light.
