Eugène Brands (Amsterdam 1913-2002). Kleine droom II, a girl standing in a small boat on a stylised green sea, sailing boats and a lighthouse beneath a glowing golden sun, rendered in a naive, dreamlike idiom in a warm ochre and green palette. Gouache on paper, 32 x 32 cm; framed 57 x 57 cm, signed and dated upper left; annotated, signed and dated again on the reverse. Purchased from Reflex Modern Art Gallery, Amsterdam. Brands was briefly associated with the CoBrA group following the movement's joint exhibition at the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, in late 1949, before developing an independent, personal idiom marked by naive, fantastical imagery and vivid, intuitive colour - qualities well represented in this "little dream" composition.
