A massive ceramic charger centrally decorated with a dragon chasing the flaming pearl, the cavetto with three cartouches enclosing cash symbols with ribbons divided by a geometric pattern. The dragon is painted in the style often seen on Yuan dynasty (1260-1368) ceramics. This impressive charger was most likely made in the Fujian province. Restoration can be seen to the central section, however, it is most likely that was to fill in a firing flaw. China, 19th century -D. 56 cm-

A rare Chinese porcelain plate decorated in grisaille and heightened in gilt depicting a central scene of Queen Louise of Denmark and Norway, the wife of King Frederick V. The portrait was taken from an engraving by Johann Martin Preissler, which in turn was after a painting by Carl Gustave Pilo (1712-1792), a historical artist who painted most of the royal families of northern Europe. The identification of the portrait has long been a mystery. Michel Beurdeley originally identified the portrait to be Queen Juliana-Maria, King Frederick V's second wife, see: Porcelain of the East India Companies, London, 1962, p. 129 and fig. 89 for a plate in the Espirito Santo Collection, Lisbon. Later research indicates that it is more likely to be Queen Louise and that the plate was made around 1750 which ties into the du Paquier-style border with cartouches of winged cherubs. An exceptionally large and rare Chinese Swatow ware charger decorated to the center with a marine rose which is surrounded by a fish, two ships and a mountainous landscape scene, the cavetto with two opposite pairs of cartouches, the one pair with a horse, the other with a dragon chasing the flaming pearl, the cartouches divided by hanging tassles and lotus against a geometric pattern. Similar charges are in various collections including the British Museum, London, UK and the RA Collection, Brasil & Portugal. However, all other known examples have cartouches enclosing emblamatic patterns rather than a horse and dragon.
