Lithograph, Alfred Bastien (Brussels 1873 - 1955) depicting a Canadian soldier.
He volunteered for military service in 195. Was transferred in 1916, as a lieutenant, together with Léon Huygens, to the newly established Artistic Department of the Army, based in Nieuwpoort. In 1917,transferred to the 22nd Inf Bat of the Canadian Army in Arras. Here he painted a whole series of watercolours of battles near Arras and Passchendaele.
At the request of King Albert, he later created the panoramic painting ‘The Panorama of the Yser’ (14 m high and 115 m long).
