[ In 1639, the West India Company captured Fort Elmina from the Portuguese after a bombardment from Mount St. Jago. Coenraadsburg Castle was built on this mountain to protect the fort in the future. After the WIC was replaced by the Second Patented West India Company in 1674, Elmina became an important focal point in the lucrative "triangle trade" between Europe, the Gold Coast and the Caribbean. In 1683 the Company was able to pay out a considerable dividend for the first time, from which the Groningen chamber also benefited: Elmina was not the least important pillar (Fulcra non minima) !]
