AR Siliqua (Barcino (Barcelona), as usuper, AD 410-411, 1.35 g) - DN MAXIMVS PF AVG Pearl-diademed, draped and cuirassed bust right / VICTOR A AAVGGG Roma seated left on cuirass, holding Victoria on globe in right hand and inverted spear in left (SMBA in ex.) (RIC X 1601 / RSC 1b) - VF, cabinet tone, extremely rare. Maximus of Spain revolted against Constantinus III in c. AD 420, just as his master general Gerontius did in AD 409. He tried to seize power in Spain but was captured and executed in public during the games elebrating Honorius’ tricennalia in AD 422. Philip Grierson tells us there are only c. 20 known examples of this rare and desirable coin.
