Lot 7018

Lot 7018
Gold Kremnitz Medallic Coinage (cf. Fr.574-576), 23.47 grams, weight of 7 Ducats - Obv: St. George slaying the Dragon; IN TEMPESTATE: SECURITAS / Rev: Christ asleep on a boat with apostles, attempting to weather a tempestuous storm - Gold 38 mm, no signatures on obverse and reverse - NGC MS62, an impressive striking of this coveted multiple ducat design, originally produced by Christian Hermann Roth as part of the larger 17th-century series struck at Kremnitz by the Roth family. These were made as a sort of "good luck talisman" as well as a status symbol. The value of these currencies ranged from ½ ducat to 100 ducats. This coin weighing 7 ducats is unknown to Friedberg, but its style clearly relates to the works of Jérémias Roth Senior (1690-1751). Fully choice, sunny golden luster pervading across the obverse and reverse faces amidst delightfully crisp detailing. An immense and pleasing example with incredible eye-appeal
