AR Denarius (Lugdunum 2 BC, 3.83 g) - CAESAR AVGVSTVS DIVI F PATER PATRIAE Laureate head right / AVGVSTI F COS DESIG PRINC IVVENT Gaius and Lucius Caesars standing facing, two shields and two spears between them (simpulum and lituus above, CL CAESARES in ex.) (RIC 207 / BMCRE 533) - VF/XF, a pleasing coin in good silver. Caius and Lucius, as sons of his daughter Julia and Agrippa, were Augustus' intended successors and adopted by him as sons. Sadly, they died before they could rule. Augustus was heartbroken and accused Livia of poisoning them in favour of her son Tiberius.
