AR Denarius (Rome, 2.98 g) - IMP M ANT GORDIANVS AFR AVG Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right / VIRTVS AVGG Virtus standing left, holding reversed spear and shield (RIC IV 3 / RSC 14) - Good VF, lightly toned (ex CNG 66 (19 May 2004), lot 1576 / ex CNG 293, lot 404). Gordian II was Roman Emperor for only one month with his father Gordian I in AD 238, the Year of the Six Emperors. Seeking to overthrow the Emperor Maximinus Thrax, he died in battle at Carthage.
