Lot 411

Lot 411
Spanish-American 8 Reales nd. with anonymous 8-petaled flower countermark attributed to Sumenep (ZENO 279122) - Spanish-American pieces were frequently counter-marked early in the 18th cent. The c/m "Sumenep" in Malay-Arabic (vdWis B14) in combination with other countermarks, like a flower and/or a number (1)230 (vdWis E54) are often found and accordingly also attributed to Sumenep. The c/m of an 8-petaled flower seems to be rather rare and may be some of the earlier c/m's applied on these coins at Sumenep and succeeded by the more frequently met c/m of a 5-petalled flower (vdWis E52). An additional c/m of a grid might be a bankers mark - VF
