AR ‘Maria Theresia Thaler’ 1756 (KM.1817) with anonymous c/m of shield with lily cross, attributed to the Sultanate of Sumanep on the isle of Madura to the east of Java (v/d Wis E 55) De Beeldenaar, March & October 1977. This c/m is found on large silver pieces, like Ducatons, Maria-Theresia-thalers and milled Spanish Eight-real pieces and mainly found on coins dated from the second half of the 18th century. AR ½ ducaton (16.36 g.), Zeeland 1792, with anonymous transitional shield-like c/m with a lily-cross and c/m in the shape of a pointed oval with a flower design, attributed to the sultanate of Sumanep on the isle of Madura to the east of Java (Ref.: cf. ZENO 26585/26589; KM 1021; Delm. 1052; CNM 2.49.60; v/d Wis E 53/55), This transitional pear-shape form ot the c/m may be dated to the second half of the 18th century and similar to the pointed oval type c/m, applied on Rupee-seize coins, Dutch ‘Generaliteits’-guilders, Quarter pagoda of British India and Spanish 4 real. This transitional form of the c/m has not been observed earlier nor has a ‘Sumanep’ countermark been reported on a half ducaton - Host coin VF, c/m gVF - Rare - Ex Vinkenborg collection
