A Japanese gold lacquer and shibayama inlay tray of 'mokko' shape raised on four bracket feet. The central design depicting a monster in the water grabbing the leg of a figure while othe figures try to free him by throwing torches, a samurai tands on a bridge waing instructions while a female figure carrying wood comes from the bridge, in the distance a house set against a mountainous landscape with tres along either side, the underside of rich 'nashiji'. Paper label to the underside dated 1896 and written '..?.. from mother', Japan, Meiji period, second half 19th century -17,3 x 24 cm, very good condition-_x000D_
