They were struck in the Chengtu and Chungling Mints by the warlords and high government officials of Sichuan (Szechuan), c. 1921-1930 and primarily used as gambling tokens. Being superior in quality to the debased cash coins then in circulation, these tokens were readily accepted by the public as legal tender whenever the recipients were willing to part with them
