½ Goldgulden (Horngulden) nd., Emden (Kappelhoff--, Fr.--, Tergast/Meier I, cf. 17) - Obv: Coat of arms with harpy shield in center, within quadrilobe; legend surrounds: + EDZARD' EOMES' * OI'EN' * PhRI' / Rev: St. Ludger standing facing, right hand raised in benediction, crozier in left, legend surrounds: SANCTV * - * LVDGERVS'* - Gold 2.32 g. - some minor edge irregularities, a.VF, a similar piece was sold by Künker in auction 239 (Oct. 2013) lot 6273, the existence of this coin type has through the ages been doubted in the specialist literature, although the coin edict issued by Edzard I in 1491 announced the minting of a half gold guilder. Only in Dutch tariff books from 1542 onwards, woodcuts of this horn guilder can be found. As far as we know, this is only the 2nd piece known
